I am looking at 2 of these, the 2002 has 53,000 kms LX model, while the
2003 Sport has 92,000 kms mostly highway. What I have read on the 2002
seems to be a better model. Any opinions?
|
I happened to look at the latest CR today, the 2002 looks like it's doing
slighly better in reliability history, than the 2003. Given that the 2002
also has fewer miles - and I'm presuming both are off warranty - personally,
I'd think the 2002 is the better bet.
Drive the hardest bargain you can. Any money you can save now will probably
be wanted for repairs sooner, rather than later, whichever Windstar you
choose.

Lincolns have never been designed for longevity or technical excellence.
I suspect they are built for "WoW" factor. To lure people with too
much money who purchase a new car every 2 or 3 years.
I tend to disagree...
I've seen one at my dealer's with about 400,000 miles on it tonight
(TownCar)
Those are built on the same platform as Police Interceptors (Crown Vics)
and Grand Marquis. Those things are body-on-frame, '60s tech (reliable
and sturdy) and are really, really tough... (Honda Civic killed itself
rear-ending mine, I might have to replace the bumper cover because of a
really nasty scratch and one of the backup-light covers has a little
crack in it). The jerk was talking on his cellphone, about serves him
right :)
We are talking about cars that used a steering box until recently (as in
trucks, my '99 has the old steering stuff, not the fancy Rack & Pinion),
and wishbone front suspension (as in trucks). Engine is the sturdy
modular 4.6 V8 (crossplane design, love that exhaust burble :)
My friend's 1978 Continental is still on the road, with only minor rust
spots (in Canada) (god I love to drive that thing... big (21 feet unless
I'm mistaking, a little bigger than my Grand Marquis LS), bigger engine
(460), comfy as an old pair of shoes too :)
Reminds me of my first car, a 10-year old 1979 Heritage Edition Tbird
(351). Contis and Tbirds were the same platforms in that era...
A/C stills works, even the *mechanical* clock...

If you haven't purchased one of the new cars on the market today how can
you say they which are good, or bad? One can have an opinion but one
sure
as hell can not compare what is on the market today with what was
available on the market just five years ago, let alone ten years ago.
Today every manufacturer is build good quality long lasting vehicles that
can easily run trouble free to 200K given the proper preventive
maintenance

I think I'll put more faith in JDP and CR than in your blather. And they
both agree, Ford is nowhere near Toyota for long-term reliability.
Since switching to Toyotas, I've got more money in my pocket. I used to
think Volvos were reliable and I was pretty happy with them but Toyota is
on
an entirely different - and better - level.

Who ever said Toyota builds shitty 4 cy engines, not me?. I know
Toyota
builds great engines. You bias is showing, you are the one calling
others
crap. I'll bet you have not driven any, let alone all, of those you
calling crap. Since you are posting in a NG chances are you do not
even
own a late model vehicle
Do you ever read what you write? You tell us, in an NG, that you own
new
and nearly new cars, yet NGs are for people who do not even own late
model cars?
Why don't you define "late model" for us?
In any event, thanks to Toyota, I can get around, reliably, with an
older
car. My car (The one the kids do not touch) is an '00, so it's 7 years
old. That's way older than I'd be willing to tolerate in a Ford.
I'm saving tons of money and, when I do look for another car, it will be
because my needs changed - or maybe just because I want a different car.
When I owned a 3 year old Ford, I went shopping for another car because
the Ford couldn't be trusted and I was getting rid of it.
Like maybe in another couple years, I'll buy a new Rav. A buddy just
got
one; it's extremely nice. He bought it, in part, because he noticed
I've
had NO problems with my three Ravs.
Or, maybe in another couple years, I'll buy another used Rav, maybe move
up to an '05. I'll save some money and still get a car I can trust.
What I said was there are plenty of vehicle on the market with V6
engine
that do much better job of motivating the vehicle than do the 4cy
engines
in Toyotas, that cost as much or more, than those that have V6 engines.
In comparison the Toyota are under powered. The 4cy Camry compared to
others car its size with V6s, including the Camry V6, is a slug,. You
can
disagree if you choose but that is a fact.
If one lives in hilly county as I do those V6 equipped vehicles will do
as
good or better than a 4cy in fuel mileages, since they do not need to
be
run down a gear or two to maintain the same speed on the same grades.
That is a fact as well. I own a V6 vehicle that does no better on
fuel,
when I drive it in hilly country, than my V8 equipped vehicle over the
same roads. Even though EPA for the V6 is 4 MPH higher that the V8.
That
is a fact as well, for the same reason.
You are free to believe whatever you choose and spend you money however
you choose. I could not care less

Get real the 4 cy Camry is a slug. You must live it flat country,
not
driven some of the competitors V6 vehicles that cost less to drive
home,
or do not know many Toyota owners, if you think Toyotas have a lot of
power. . LOL
mike
If your experience with I4 engines is in Fords, GMs and Crapslers,
then
I
understand why you think a bigger motor is necessary, because their
I4s
are crap. Toyota, however, does not build shitty I4 engines.

What is it with Ford front grilles anyways?
Fusion, Edge, many more, they all have those fake chrome grilles
that add nothing to the car's look (it looks like cheap bling-bling

Chrome is good, when it's tasteful. But it seems they overdesigned
those parts...
Just wondering...

Toyota Trucks have similar grilles. Are theirs "tasteful?

We've decided to take the Mercury and sell the V70XC (thanks for all

V70XC to CarMax sometime soon...I'll update with whatever we get for
it. We're looking for something in the $7,000-8,000 range -- we paid
$9,000 for the car a little less than two years ago, and we've only
put on 6,000 miles, so it seems pretty reasonable.
Look for an update soon!

OK, long-due update 2:
CarMax offered us only $2500...apparently, and I quote, "AWD Volvos
aren't currently in demand." This is the day after we have about half
a foot of snow. Oh well.
So now we're going to attempt to sell it private-party ourselves.
Anyone interested? We're looking in the $7500+ range. |
